Founded and fronted by émigré Trinidadian songwriter Drew Gonsalves, Kobo Town’s music has been variously described as “an intoxicating blend of lilting calypsonian wit, dancehall reggae and trombone-heavy brass” (Guardian) and a “unique, transnational composite of rhythm, poetry and activist journalism.”(Exclaim!) From their home in Toronto, the JUNO-nominated group has brought their distinct calypso-inspired sound to audiences across the world, from Port-of-Spain to Paris and from Montreal to Malaysia.

Inspired by the New Orleans brass band tradition, the Heavyweights’original stance keeps one foot firmly rooted in the rich legacy of jazz, while one foot steps forward into the future. Like the music’s originators, the Heavyweights are unafraid to incorporate influences from disparate areas of the musical spectrum, from pop hits of the day to original compositions, from R&B and funk throwbacks to the infectious rhythms of Latin America, all woven together with the thread of adventuresome sophistication.

FIXT Point

The Tale of a Town Muskoka/Parry Sound is a lively art project that invites the audience to interact with local stories in unusual spaces through live performance and also digitally through interactive technology built as an extension to each locale. Combining live and recorded music, interview sound bytes, and video footage, this project is based on stories taken from neighbourhood interviews and memories about downtown Huntsville, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Burk’s Falls and Sundridge, and are woven together to create a narrative tale that recounts the history of our town through personal stories of humour and courage using recorded interviews and live feed cameras on a tiny town Marquette.
